Seventy two witnesses gave evidence – Army [August 26 2013]

The Army Court of Inquiry has recorded evidence from 72 witnesses during its investigations in to the chain of events at Rathupaswala-Weliweriya that took place from July 27 to August 1, the Army said today.

Among the witnesses were 58 Army personnel associated with the incidents, the Army said issuing a press release. Clergy, Police personnel, wounded victims and eye witnesses were among the others who gave evidence.

The CoI handed over its report of findings to the Army Commander Lieutenant General Daya Rathnayake on August 21. The report is now referred to the Directorate of Legal Services of the Army for observations, Sri Lanka Army stated in the press release.

The Court of Inquiry, appointed by the Army Commander on August 2, included five senior Army officers presided over by Major General N.A.J.C. Dias who is the present Adjutant General of the Sri Lanka Army. Other members included Brigadier K.J. Jayaweera, Brigadier N.I. de Silva, Colonel T.D. Weerakoon and Lieutenant Colonel W.P.A.D.W. Nanayakkara.
