Police after Sugala Devis treasure hunters [October 04 2013]

Police is after a group of persons who had allegedly broken into the final resting place of the ancient local princess Sugala Devi and had stolen jewellery that had been encased with the remains. A group of men in the guise of quarry workers had destroyed the boulder covering the entrance to a cave where the remains of Sugala Devi was believed to have been placed in Meewathpura in Mahaweli C zone. The treasure hunters have allegedly taken the remains of the princess along with the jewellery to a forest where they had burned the remains and fled with the jewellery. Sugala Devi lived during the time of King Parakramabahu in Polonnaruwa in the 12th century A.D.
