A batch of old coins belong to the 19th century was unearthed when a group of students of Bharathi Tamil School in Wattegama removed a mound of earth that gathered in the school premises due to the heavy rains.
The batch consisted of 23 coins of 1870, 11 10cents coins of 1893 and 52 5cents coins of 1892. The collection had been handed over to Archaeological Department Kandy Branch, the police said.
