Three women arrested with illicit gold [December 05 2013]

Three women who tried to smuggle out unfinished gold jewellery worth over Rs.2.5million was arrested by the Customs officials at the Bandaranaike International Airport this morning.

They were carrying three gold chains and 13 bangles which were seemed to be rough and unfinished, Customs Spokesman Director Leslie Gamini said.

The suspects who were bound for Mumbai, India were searched on suspicion and found the contraband.

According to latest Customs regulations gold jewellery which are in an unfinished state or not industrially manufactured do not qualify to be imported or exported.
