First ever Gamma irradiation facility established [December 28 2013]

The first ever Government owned multi-purpose Gamma Irradiation Facility investing nearly 760 million rupees established at the Export processing Zone in Biyagama. The implementation part of the project is under the Ministry of Technology and Research.

Gamma Radiation Facility which will be using Cobalt 60 as radioactive material and the initial activity of the radiation plant would be 250 kilocurie (kCi). The designed maximum activity of the Gamma Irradiation Facility is 3000 kCi and it will be upgraded for the maximum strength with the demand.

Gamma Irradiation Plants are widely used in a number of countries for sterilization of medical products and food preservation. The establishment of such a plant will make it possible to obtain a better export market. Upgrading of the activity will provide to enhance the processing capacity allowing many more customers to obtain irradiation service in future.
