Illicit fish exporter apprehended [December 28 2013]

An ornamental fish trader who tried to export a large batch of Grouper Fish worth over Rs.130, 000 was arrested by the Customs official at the Air Cargo Terminal of the Bandaranaike International Airport this morning.

The trader a resident of Wattala had tried to export 235 Grouper Fishes in 24 boxes to Hong Kong without a permit of the Department of Fisheries and Aquatic Resources, Customs Spokesman Director Leslie Gamini said.

The contraband was forfeited and a fine of Rs.10, 000 was imposed on the trader.
