Checks on popular sea bathing sites [January 04 2014]

The Marine Environment Protection Authority (MEPA) will start testing water of popular sea bathing locations along the coast, according to the Environment Ministry. Under the new program more tests will be done to identify the pollutants and accordingly action will be taken to reduce their inflow in to the sea. Awareness programs will also be conducted to educate people using the coastal areas for recreation activities and livelihood. Infrastructure facilities will be provided for local and foreign tourists visiting the locations..

Over population of the coast and developing the hotel industry in these areas poses a threat to the coastal environment. The pollution is making the water unsuitable for people to bath.
