Albino turtles transferred to Colombo Zoo [January 16 2014]

The four albino turtles who were in the centre of a controversy at a turtle hatchery in Kosgoda were ordered to be transferred to Colombo Zoo by the Balapitiya Magistrate today.

The owner of the Kosgoda Turtle Conservation Centre Chandrasiri Abrew and his employee Daminda Namal Kumara were produced before Balapitiya Magistrate for allegedly lodging a false complaint that one of turtles went missing in mid December.

Abrew was released on a cash bail of Rs.15, 000 and a surety bail of Rs.1 million and the other on a surety bail of Rs.500, 000, the Police Spokesman said.

They were also ordered another surety bail of Rs.500, 000 each for violating Fauna and Flora Act by possessing turtles. The duo were ordered to be reappeared before courts on February 19.
