Swallowed gold seized [February 26 2014]

Two Sri Lankans who tried to leave the country for Cochin in Kerala by swallowing gold nuggets worth over Rs.3.7million were arrested by the Customs official at the Bandaranaike International Airport recently.

The suspects who were from Maradana and Meegoda areas have each swallowed over 300grams of gold nuggets totally weighing at 728grams, Customs Spokesman Director Leslie Gamini said.

They were produced before Negombo Magistrate who ordered them to be hospitalised to retrieve the swallowed valuables. Customs Deputy Director D N Hettiarchchi conducted the inquiries.
