Two Parliament staff arrested for Rs.11m fraud [February 26 2014]

Two members of the Parliament staff have been arrested by the CID for their alleged involvement in a missing sum of Rs.11million of the Parliament Employees Thrift Committee.

The CID acting on a complaint lodged by the new office bearers of the thrift committee on October 25, 2013, arrested the two staff members who were attached to the previous committee.

The new office bearers came into power at the committees AGM on September 17, 2013 had informed the outgoing committee to hand over all the remaining funds and relevant documents.

The outgoing treasurer Pushpakumara Dharmadasa who had not submitted the funds and the documents had not reported to work since then. He had reportedly fled the country, the police said.

Out of the two arrested suspects one had allegedly taken Rs.4.5million and the other had taken Rs.6.5milion. They were produced before Hulftsdorp Magistrate and remanded.
