Child kidnappers nabbed with ransom [April 10 2014]

An attempt to take ransom of Rs.3million to release an eight-year-old boy who was abducted in his neighbourhood in Maligawatta yesterday was successfully thwarted by the police today, the police said.

The boy, Minhaj Mohamed of Maligawatta Flats had not returned home after attending the Muslim religious school last evening. The boys father had received an anonymous call demanding Rs.3million to release his son. The caller had also threatened him not to inform the police.

The father however with the assistance of the police had gone to pay the ransom to Hunupitiya Railway Station in Wattala, where he was instructed to get on board a Colombo bound train. Once he got on to the train he was directed to throw the money bag out of the train in Wedikanda area.

When the father had followed the orders a police party had also jumped off the train and had managed to arrest two suspects who had collected the money. Having questioned them the police raided a house in Hunupitiya area where they found the child with another suspect.

Three teams under the instructions of Maligawatta OIC Rohan Perera conducted the investigations. Police Constables Mendis (76865), Lanka (8483) and Srilal (84275) jumped off the moving train and nabbed the suspects.
