Police nab 1,631 drunk drivers during Avurudu [April 19 2014]

The police apprehended 1, 631 drivers who drove under the influence of alcohol during the new year week.

The special monitoring operation was conducted countrywide for eleven days starting from 6.00am on April 10th Thursday to 6.00am on Saturday April 20th, the police said.

There were 12 public passenger transport drivers including 11 private bus drivers, 900 motorcyclists, 563 trishaw drivers and 156 other vehicle drivers.

During the week between April 10th to 16th 56 fatal accidents had been reported countrywide with 62 deaths. Altogether 593 accidents reported during this period of 212 were grave injury accidents.
