Rs.1m reward leading to the arrest of cop killers [May 06 2014]

The police department is offering Rs.1 million to successful information leading to the arrest of the suspects who were responsible for the abduction and killing of a Constable and injuring another in Kurunegala early this morning.

Two Constables attached to the Traffic Branch of the Kurunegala Police were on duty last night in Badagamuwa area whom were confronted by an armed gang in a vehicle, the police said.

The gang believed to have been returning after a robbery had forcibly taken the two officers with them. The policemen were subsequently shot by the gang killing one on the spot and injuring the other.

Police Spokesman SSP Ajith Rohana said that six teams have been deployed to find the fleeing gang and the CID is conducting investigations.

The killed officer has been identified as 42-year-old Yapa Mudiyanselage Chandana Sampath and the injured Akurathge Herath Ajith Weerasuriya (39) whi is being treated at Kurunegala Hospital. His condition is learnt to be out of danger.
