24 killed, over 9000 still in camps - DMC [June 06 2014]

Twenty four persons have been killed and 114 , 272 people were affected by the adverse weather conditions prevailed in five districts since last week due to the pre monsoon period, the Disaster Management Centre announced.

Out of the displaced 9, 099 persons of 2, 232 families in Western and Sabaragumwa provinces, who were affected by the floods and landslides are still remaining in camps and safety locations. 235 houses have completely been destroyed whilst 1, 506 were partly damaged.

Meanwhile the Meteorological Department warned of a three day danger period from June 06 to 09 due to the commencement of Southwestern Monsoon that could invite heavy showers and thundershowers to Southern, Sabaragamuwa, Western and Central provinces in the coming days.

Fishermen are warned of rough seas with a wind speed of 70 to 80 kilometres per hour.

National Building Research Organisation said potential landslide threats in Kalutara, Ratnapura, Kegalle, Nuwara Eliya and Galle districts in the coming days due to the heavy rains expected.
