Sgamuwa Uni students injured in gang attack [October 11 2014]

At least 12 students of the Sabaragamuwa University were injured when an unidentified gang hurled petrol bombs at the makeshift hut they have set up to carry a hunger strike on Friday night, the police said.

A masked group armed with clubs and swords that stormed in a van had started attacking the students who were protesting near the main entrance of the Sabaragamuwa University at Pambahinna Junction on the Badulla - Colombo Road.

About 12 students who were injured were admitted to the Pambahinna Hospital and six of them were transferred to the Balangoda Base Hospital in a critical condition, the police said.

The Sabaragamuwa University was closed indefinitely last Sunday after several female students had forced their way into the men’s hostel following an altercation over a hostel issue.
