Couple nabbed with gold in underwear [November 08 2014]

A local couple that tried to enter the country carrying gold worth Rs.59 million concealed in their undergarments was arrested by the Customs officials at the Bandaranaike International Airport in Katunayake this afternoon.

Customs Spokesman Director Leslie Gamini said the officials found 118 pieces of gold weighing over 11 kilograms. The couple returning from Singapore on UL 303 arrived at 4.20pm.

The female suspect aged 46 was reportedly hiding 48 pieces of gold in four underwears she was wearing. The man (35) was also wearing four underwears and hiding 70 pieces within. The couple was from Wattala.

The investigations are being conducted by Deputy Director of Customs Ranjan Hewagama and his team Assistant Director Anura Walgamage, Customs Superintendent Saroj Chandrasena, Deputy Superintendent P H U I Wijepala, Assistant Superintendents C P Abeywickrama, Ms. Romance Sledges.
