Two more housing projects replacing slums [November 18 2014]

Two new housing schemes to facilitate undeserved settlements in Colombo will be opened this week by President Mahinda Rajapaksa. The two projects, Randiya Uyana in Henemulla and Sirimuthu Uyana in Edirisinghe watte in Colombo 14, comprises 1653 housing units. Randiya Uyana will be opened today and the Sirimuthu Uyana will be opened on November 21.

Each housing unit consists of a living area, two bed rooms, pantry and a balcony with all amenities including proper sanitary facilities. The schemes is built in the vicinity of their former homes, so there will not be a drastic change in their habitats. In addition more facilities like a public convenience place, play grounds and car parking facilities are also available.

The Government has planned to construct 70 thousand housing units for low income families living in Colombo city. These projects are undertaken by the Urban Development Authority in its mid-term programs under the guidance of President Rajapaksa.
