Two children killed by reckless lorry drivers [December 06 2014]

Two children aged five and 15 years died in two separate accidents reported from Gampola and Chilaw yesterday due to reckless driving, the police said.

A lorry bound for Legumdeniya from Panwila had veered off course and run over a boy standing beside Galaha – Gampola Main Road in Pussatenna area.

The five-year-old Pushparaj Ravichandran, who sustained serious injuries had been rushed to Gampola Hospital but was pronounced dead shortly after admittance.

Gampola Police Traffic Branch arrested the lorry driver and will be produced before Gampola Magistrate.

Meanwhile in Chilaw a speeding lorry travelling towards Colombo on Chilaw – Colombo Main Road ran over a cyclist that was heading for the same direction in Maikkulama area, the police said.

The victim identified as Nimesh Eranda Lakmal (15) was rushed to Chilaw Hospital but succumbed to his injuries shortly after. He was a resident of Halamba, Maikkulama.

The driver of the lorry was taken into custody by the Chilaw Police.
