Police arrest 355 drunk drivers since Christmas eve [December 27 2014]

Police nabbed a staggering 355 drivers who drove under the influence of liquor through out the country in this festive season commenced since the Christmas eve.

Police Spokesman SSP Ajith Rohana said a special surveillance program was launched from 6.00am December 24 to be carried out until 6.00am January 01 to apprehend people the drunk drivers.

Among the arrested are 181 motorcyclists, 118 trishaw drivers, 25 car drivers, 12 lorry drivers, 11 van drivers and eight other vehicles. This also included four persons who drove public transportation vehicles.

The 24 hours starting from Friday 6.00am December 26 to Saturday 6.00am December 27 alone the police nabbed 192 drunk drivers. Three of the four bus drivers had been nabbed during this period only, he said.

SSP Rohana warned the public to be careful in sitting behind the wheel after consuming alcoholic beverages in this period as tough legal action would be meted out against the culprits.
