Maithri to swear in as new President [January 09 2015]

Common Opposition Candidate Maithripala Sirisena who elected to be the Seventh Executive President of the Democratic, Socialist, Republic of Sri Lanka with a striking victory at the yesterdays election, will take oaths as the new President this evening, the Common Opposition announced.

Mr. Sirisena secured a total of 6, 217, 162 votes with a percentage of 51.3 by defeating the former President Mahinda Rajapaksa who received only 5, 768, 090 with a percentage of 47.58.

New Democratic Front won 12 out of 22 electoral districts including Colombo, Gampaha, Badulla, Mahanuwara, Matale, Nuwara Eliya, Puttalam, Polonnaruwa, Vanni, Jaffna, Trincomalee and Batticaloa.

Whilst the issuance of results were progressing, outgoing President Rajapaksa decided to vacate Temple Trees early this morning, following a brief discussion with the members of the security council and Opposition Leader Ranil Wickremesinghe, whom he assured a smooth transfer of power.
