The Sri Lanka Freedom Party (SLFP) Youth Front has urged all political parties represented in parliament to extend support for the 20th Amendment.

"President Maithripala Sirisena pledged to prune executive presidential powers during his campaign and did so. The next challenge is to pass the 20th Amendment and introduce a new electoral system to elect members who are directly responsible to Parliament, "Deputy Media Minister and SLFP Youth Front President, Shantha Bandara told the Sunday Observer.

He said, there was no need to hold a General Election as the current Parliament could continue until April 2016.

The Deputy Minister said the UNP has proposed to reduce the number of electorates from 160 to 125. "This may cause practical problems. We request the UNP not to submit proposals which are impractical," he said.
