Rohitha transferred to general ward [June 26 2016]

UPFA Kalutara District Parliamentarian Rohitha Abeygunawardena who was admitted to the ICU of a private hospital in Colombo on Friday (June 24) due to injuries sustained during a Joint Opposition's protest held in Colombo Fort was transferred to a general ward on Saturday (June 25) apparently due to his condition not being serious.

According to sources, the condition of MP Abeygunawardena is not reported to be serious but the injuries sustained on the forehead have impacted on one eye.

Meanwhile, UPFA Digamadulla District MP Sriyani Wijewickrama told the Sunday Observer that she had a swelling on her left leg caused during the melee and that she found it difficult to walk due to the pain. She said she was receiving ayurvedic treatment at the moment. She was discharged after being admitted to Colombo National Hospital on Friday. The Joint Opposition engaged in a protest march in Colombo on Friday against government moves to extend the term of Central Bank Governor Arjuna Mahendran, the recent VAT hike, political witch-hunt of Joint Opposition members and delaying in holding Local Government Elections.

The protest march commenced near the Lake House roundabout and proceeded towards the Finance Ministry via Bank of Ceylon Mawatha and Galle Face roundabout. However, the Police had obtained a court order preventing protesters from entering the Central Bank complex. Which is in a High Security Zone city

Barricades had been erected opposite the World Trade Centre to prevent protesters from marching towards the Ministry. MP Abeygunawardena had been injured as a result of being pushed against the barricade. Despite the incident, the protest continued and the protesters attempted to march towards the Ministry of Finance but were unable to do so.
