SLFP marks 65 anniversary today [September 04 2016]

The Sri Lanka Freedom Party (SLFP), one of the major political parties in Sri Lanka will celebrate its 65th Anniversary in Kurunegala today.

The Late Prime Minister, S.W.R.D. Bandaranaike, formed the SLFP on the September 2, 1951 at a meeting held at the Colombo Town Hall. He was unanimously elected as the chairman of the party and Bernard Aluvihare, Badi-ud-din Mohamud and S. Thangaraja were elected as co-secretaries. George R. De Silva was the first Treasurer of the Party.

H. Sri Nissanka, T.B. Illangaratne, A.P. Jayasooriya, Maithripala Senanayake and D.A. Rajapaksa were the rest of founder members.

The SLFP has formed a people friendly government in 1956 which laid the foundation for many social and economic changes in the country.
