President to attend NAM Summit and UN Assembly [September 11 2016]

President Maithripala Sirisena will visit Venezuela ahead of his trip to New York to take part in the 71st United Nations (UN) General Assembly. President will be taking part in the 17th Non-Aligned Movement (NAM) Summit in Caracas, Venezuela which will be held on Sept.17 and 18, 2016.

Sri Lanka, one of the founding members of NAM hosted the Non-Aligned Movement Conference in Colombo in 1976 when Sirimavo Bandaranaike was Prime Minister. President Maithripala Sirisena is also scheduled to address the annual UN General Assembly in New York on Sept. 21

The United Nations Human Rights Council (UNHRC) passed a resolution on Sri Lanka titled ‘Promoting Reconciliation, Accountability and Human Rights in Sri Lanka’ in September 2015 and the issue will be aken up again in the next session which will be held in March, 2017
