JVP cast doubts on new electoral system by Deepal Warnakulasuriya Janatha Vimukthi Peramuna accused the government of introducing a new electoral system to ensure a UNP victory in the local government elections and warned that they will agitate against such a system since it would not help to develop the country. The warning was issued by JVP Parliamentarian and Party Propaganda Secretary Wimal Weerawansa at a press briefing, Friday. Weerawansa also accused the government of not being genuine in its peace efforts and charged that they were being drawn into a well concealed trap set by the LTTE. He said that the month-long ceasefire and the MoU which is to be signed by the government and the LTTE shortly, will help the LTTE to strengthen its war front and fortify its bunkers. Commenting on the JVP peace initiatives, he said they were for peace talks providing the LTTE didn't lay down any pre-conditions. Weerawansa also expressed fears that the UNP may continue with its policy of revenge attacks on other political parties even after the March local government elections and charged that the government had given a March 1 date for the election because they wanted to have the elections ahead of the Budget 2002 in March 6. "If the elections are to be held after the budget, they may not be able to handle it as they wish", he said. |
