LAUGFS reduces gas price

LAUGFS Lanka Gas (Pvt) Ltd. reduced the price of its domestic gas cylinders by Rs. 50 with effect from last week.

Accordingly, a LAUGFS gas cylinder, which had cost Rs. 409, will now cost Rs. 359. "We hope to bring down gas prices even further," the company's Chairman W.K.H. Wegapitiya told a media briefing last week.

The move had come about as a result of discussions Minister of Commerce and Consumer Affairs Ravi Karunanayake had with LAUGFS officials.

"We are trying to end the monopoly on gas and bring down prices even further. Discussions have also been going on with Shell Gas," the Minister said. A Shell gas cylinder for domestic use is now sold at Rs. 509.

LAUGFS started operations five years ago with auto gas conversions. It started selling gas to the local market about two months ago. The company initially provided its services to consumers in the Western Province, but now serves many other areas as well. (IT)
