'Flame of Hope' burns bright In another gesture to demonstrate its concern for supporting worthy causes, Odel Unlimited has conceptualised the 'Corner of Hope'. Located near the entrance of Odel, a section identified as the 'Corner of Hope' is given out free of charge to any charitable organisation, to enable it to hold any promotion or sale of products for fund-raising purposes. While this concept has been formalised now, even in the past, several charity concerns have held sales and exhibitions at Odel. Many patrons of Odel support these causes. Out of the many charitable organisations that had availed themselves of this generous offer by Odel is Navajeevana, a community based rehabilitation centre for disabled children, which held a sale at the Corner of Hope recently. A 2002 calendar, created by disabled children from Navajeevana, went on sale and the proceeds were in aid of rehabilitation services for disabled people throughout southern Sri Lanka. This project will come under the direct supervision of Odel Foundation, the charity arm of Odel. New digital photo services Kodak has introduced new digital services for its customers. With the introduction of the System 88, a digital photo development mini-lab, Kodak photo retailers can not only offer consumers prints from traditional 35 mm and Advanced Photo System films, but also automatically improve their pictures and create a range of choices for themselves. Powered by Kodak technology, System 88 enables photo consumers to get better pictures, correcting over and under-exposure and eliminating red eye as well as fixing pictures with shadow and blacklight problems. Pictures could be printed from traditional as well as digital sources such as slides, diskettes, CDs, digital camera and existing photographs. System 88 allows consumers to print black and white pictures from a coloured negative, add captions to pictures, create visiting cards, and design photo calendars. System 88 will be launched in seven Kodak Express stores by the end of this month. At present, most photo retailers in Asia use the traditional optical mini-lab system. Total Plan for a cleaner bathroom Total Plan Lanka (Pvt) Ltd., said to be the first professional toilet maintenance company in the country, was launched recently. The company is the local branch of Japan's Total Plan (Pvt) Ltd which provides specialised services in professional toilet maintenance and Do Amenity Group of Companies in Japan which is said to be the first toilet maintenance specialist in the world. Managing Director Total Plan Lanka H. Samarajeewa said: "Toilets are breeding grounds for germs. Germs not only make toilets unhealthy, but also form stains, generate bad odour and turn the surface dim, thereby making it unpleasant and unsuitable to use. However, people may not have adequate time to devote to this and also there maybe areas which cannot be seen and are out of reach. This is where our services come in." The other services provided by the company are air-conditioner and filter cleaning, water tank cleaning, bathroom resurfacing and ceramic items painting, garden maintenance and a mobile cleaning service. Total Plan Lanka is also an importer and distributor of automatic air fresheners and dispensers. Degrees for students without A/Ls The Imperial Institute of Higher Education (IIHE) has commenced an access programme that enables students who do not have the requisite Advanced Level grades for graduate courses, to pursue higher studies and obtain an internationally recognised degree from the University of Wales. Enrolment for the Access Program during the new academic year will commence this month alongside the intake for the regular degree programmes of the University of Wales. This is timed for students who received their GCE Advanced Level examination results recently, the IIHE said. "IIHE's Access programme is an alternative to A-Levels. It is structured to enable GCE Ordinary Level students who have a minimum of six passes to qualify for University of Wales degree courses. Once a student successfully completes the Access programme, he or she can enter the first year of the B.Sc degree programme," said the Institute's Director of Academic Affairs Daya Jayasinghe. The Access programme complements IIHE's undergraduate programme which offers B.Sc (Honours) in Business Management, Banking and Finance, Economics and Accounting and Finance. The qualifications the institute offers are all internal degrees awarded by the University of Wales. "We went to make tertiary education accessible to as many students as possible," Mr. Jayasinghe added. "We at IIHE believe that failure to get good grades at the GCE examination does not necessarily mean the end of the education road for a student." IIHE is said to be the only validated centre of the University of Wales in the Indian subcontinent that provides students the opportunity of obtaining an internationally recognised degree without leaving the country and at an affordable price.
