Amrith de Soysa excels in golf Fourteen-year-old Amrith de Soysa won the under-15 (category B) title at the East India Junior Golf Championship in Calcutta, India last month by a staggering 11 strokes. There were over 100 juniors from India vying for honours. He was placed fourth in the overall category. Then earlier this month, young De Soysa won the All-India Junior Golf Championship in the under-15 (category B) by just one stroke and finished eighth in the overall Championship (under-18). He had the fortune of beating India's under-15 top seed Aditya Singh in both events. Meanwhile, three top amateurs from Sri Lanka (Anura Rohana - captain, Lalith Kumara and young Jehan de Saram) are presently playing in the Bangladesh Amateur Championship in Dhaka which concludes tomorrow (Monday). The President of the Sri Lanka Golf Union (SLGU) Shiran de Soysa, accompanied the players as manager. Sri Lanka are also scheduled play in the All-India Amateur Championship in Calcutta in January/February and the Pakistan Amateur Championship at Islamabad in March. The South Asian Association of Regional Co-operation (SAARC) Team and Individual Championship is likely to be staged in India (venue not yet informed) in either February or March, while Sri Lanka are to host this tournament next year (2003). The Sri Lanka Amateur Championship has been scheduled for October, while one leg of the Indian Pro Circuit too is likely to be staged in Sri Lanka in October with over 100 top professionals playing. The tourney is organised by Tiger Sports Marketing (Pvt) Limited of India. Sri Lanka are also to play in the Queen Sirikit Cup Team and Individual Championship for Ladies in April at Kuala Lumpur, Malaysia. (L.G.) |
