Record weekly sale average for tea The Colombo tea auction last week recorded a total sale average of Rs. 159.06, the highest it has ever recorded. The previous high of Rs. 157.02 was recorded in November 2001. The Low Grown average for the week of Rs. 175.81 was also a record, of which the previous high was Rs. 169.93 last October, the Weekly Tea Market Report of Forbes and Walker Tea Brokers (Pvt) Ltd. said. Meanwhile, the total auction quantities showed a further improvement and totalled 8.1 million kg. This is the largest sale since May 2001, when 8.8 million kg was traded. Ex-estate offerings too reflected an increase over the last, comprising 1.1 million kg. Prices for Low Growns, which were strong in the recent past, declined this week by five rupees and more. There was less interest from Iran while other outmarkets too were less active. However, it was encouraging to note the widespread interest at the bottom end of the market although at lower levels. The lower prices could be attributed to the generally uninteresting quality, the increased weight on offer and the lower trend in prices experienced at last week's Mombasa auction, the report said. |
