IMechE President in Sri Lanka President of the Institution of Mechanical Engineers (IMechE), UK Tony Roche and Director General Sir Michael Moore will be on an official visit to Sri Lanka on February 23. The IMechE Group, Sri Lanka has organised several programmes for the Presidents' visit Mr. Roche and Sir Moore are scheduled to meet Sri Lankan engineers who are members of the IMechE. They will also visit the faculties of engineering at Peradeniya and Moratuwa Universities to discuss the accreditation of the engineering degrees and make a courtesy call on President, Institution of Engineers, Sri Lanka, Eng. B. R. O. Fernando. The highlight of the IMechE President's visit is the 12th George Stephenson Lecture 'Changing Trains' at the Colombo Hilton. The lecture will focus on the progressive changes in train engineering in the UK and worldwide. Mr. Roche will reflect on the benefits of engineering invention, innovation and development, both past and present, on train design and construction. He will review how privatisation of UK railways has influenced the demands on current operators and their suppliers and comment on the latest developments in high-speed trains in the UK. He will conclude with examples from further afield of how, through innovation, future inter-city rail travel may change radically. Tony Roche is a career rail engineer, having spent some 40 years with British Rail. Throughout this period he has majored on train engineering including being the Project Manager for the prototype high-speed train, Britain's most successful train in the last 25 years. His career has spanned design, new construction and all levels of maintenance of locomotives and rolling stock, all against a background of management of change. He has held many senior posts within the industry, ultimately becoming the Executive Board Member of British Rail responsible for Engineering, safety and support services. In this appointment he played a major role in the privatisation of UK rail. He is now a Director of First Class Partnership Limited, a consultancy company advising senior policy and decision-makers in the rail industry. |
