SLMC leader condemns harassment of Muslims "At a time when the opportune for permanent peace is in the offing, inhuman harassment of innocent Muslims and squandering their belongings would only affect the belief in peace being nurtured among them", stated leader of the Sri Lanka Muslim Congress Rauff Hakeem, referring to recent incidents that took place in Muttur, in the East. Three Muslims had been abducted from Shafi Nagar in Muttur last Wednesday and were dumped in a paddy field the following day, severely injured. Fifteen bicycles belonging to Muslims have been taken away.Minister Hakeem in a statement has said that, the Sri Lanka Muslim Congress and he himself personally are perturbed over the incidents, consequent to which, Muslims of the area are in fear and anguish. Expressing his dismay on the continued perpetration of violent acts on Muslims, generally in the North-East, particulary in the Eastern Province, whenever endeavours were made to achieve permanent peace in the country, the leader of the Muslim Congress has said that, he has had brought the matter to the attention of Mr. Bernard Gunatilleke, who is in charge of the Secretariat for Peace, which functions at the Ministry of Foreign Affairs and that he would take up the issue with Premier Ranil Wickremesinghe on latter's return from abroad, aiming to prevent and put a stop to such incidents. The leader of the Muslim Congress has stressed in his statement that at a time when the LTTE and Government are unilaterally adopting measures of ceasefire and when preparations are made for permanent ceasefire agreement, unleashing of such horrendous attacks continuously on Muslims, could not be condoned. |
