Accent on 'International Terrorism' President Chandrika Bandaranaike Kumaratunga will inaugurate the 17th Interpol Asian Regional Conference at the BMICH tomorrow at 5.00 p.m. Mr. John Amaratunga, Minister of Interior, Mr. Tilak Marapone, Minister of Defence, Mr. Tyronne Fernando, Minister of Foreign Affairs, Foreign Ambassadors and several heads of government departments will also be present on the occasion. This year's conference is hosted by the Sri Lanka Police under the direction of Mr. B. L. V. de S. Kodituwakku, the Inspector General of Police. Interpol with a membership of 179 nations, supports co-operation between police in all nations in the world in fighting international crime, including drug trafficking and terrorism which are rampant today. Once in every two years, the 47 nations that comprises the Asian Region of Interpol get together to discuss common policing problems and to consider ways of improving international police co-operation in the region. As hosts of the 17th Asian Regional Conference, Sri Lanka will welcome over 100 police delegates from various countries in the world. Police experts in a variety of fields will address police leaders, and set a future agenda for police action in the region on some key policing problems for today. The theme of this conference is 'International terrorism', a subject of considerable interest and concern to all police and the peoples of the world. It is a subject that will evoke intense and confidential discussion among the police leaders and police experts at the conference. |
