Sri Lanka - India dual rowing regatta in August by LESLIE FERNANDO Oarsmen and oarswomen are in luck's way. For the first time, a dual Sri Lanka and India Regatta will be held in August this year on the Beira Lake, Colombo Rowing Club. The former Thomian and Sri Lanka oarsman, Rohan Fernando - the President of the Amateur Rowing Association of Sri Lanka (ARASL) told the Sunday Observer. This event is confirmed and Sri Lanka will host it. The proposal came from Col. Singh Deo, the President of the All-India Amateur Rowing Association and the ARASL readily agreed. This regatta will be a preparatory meet for the Sri Lanka rowers who are billed to participate at the Asian Games to be held in Pusan, South Korea in September - October. The ARASL will finalise the events and the exact date for this maiden dual by end of February. Preferably the usual events for both men and women in sculls, pairs and fours will be worked off. The Sri Lanka squad will be picked from the national squad in training and the performances at the Rowing Nationals to be held from February 23 to March 2, too will be taken into count. The ARASL will review the national squad and a training program will begin under the national coach and other experienced coaches. This year the events at the National Championships will be same as past years and the champions will be decided on men's and women's seniors, intermediate boys and girls and junior boys and girls. Entries will close on February 17 and all affiliated clubs are eligible to enter. The ARASL will introduce a new event at this years nationals - a double sculls exhibition race. The annual general meeting of the Amateur Rowing Association of Sri Lanka will be held on March 29 at the Colombo Rowing Club. |
