Joint Business Forum supports peace initiative

The Joint Business Forum, which comprises chambers of commerce and industry, employers' organisations and trade associations of Sri Lanka, has extended its wishes to the peace process initiated by the Government of Sri Lanka along with Norwegian facilitation, which has culminated in the signing of a Memorandum of Understanding with the LTTE.

In a news release, the Forum said: "We view this courageous and far-sighted initiative as the best chance for peace.

"The Forum firmly believes that a resolution of the conflict and lasting peace can only come about through committed and sustained negotiations in a spirit of give and take. We note with profound sorrow the loss of over 60,000 lives and the displacement of hundreds of thousands of helpless people who languish in refugee camps. Further, hundreds of thousands including top professionals have fled the country due to this war. Malnourishment of innocent children, and the breakdown in law and order in the whole country are some of the other adverse impacts of this war on our people."

The Forum has offered its support at this crucial juncture to all the parties engaged in seeking a solution to this vexed problem, it has said.
