Galway Forest Lodge - Nuwara Eliya's nature's paradise

by Beverley Jansz

A short drive from the Nuwara Eliya town along Upper Lake Road, through a forest, will lead you to a beautiful hideout called Galway Forest Lodge amidst a gorgeous forest reserve called Galway.

It is certainly a nature's haven and paradise for tourists, be it a foreigner or Sri Lanka. The hotel is surrounded by the famous Galway forest reserve.

When a guest enters his room, his eyes catches the breathtaking view of the luscious forest reserve and green tea plantation, from the windows. Built in natural surroundings, just 1.5 kms from the Nuwara Eliya town, overlooking the stillness of the Galway forest reserve, is this first boutique-type hotel in Sri Lanka. At the hotel, guests find everything they need to get away from the hazzle of city civilisation but without leaving any of its modern comforts behind. The beauty of the surroundings and the superb amenities are enhanced by the most attentive, friendly, yet unobstructive service of the staff, from Resident Manager, Tyrell Morrision right down to the Room Boy.

Galway Forest Lodge is an eco-friendly tourist hotel consisting of 52 tastefully designed cozy rooms with television, mini bar, telephone and piped music with a marvellous interior decor to match the boutique type concept of the hotel.

In March 2001, Galway Forest Lodge was awarded 3-star classification. Since then the hotel offers its guests all modern facilities that are second to none compared to any 5-star hotel in Sri Lanka.

The architecture of the hotel is marvellous. The initial hard work has been put in by two versatile hoteliers, Ken Peiris, the present Management Consultant/CEO and Chandana Fernando, General Manager of Galway Hotel Management Services, which also own and manage the Galway Miridiya Lodge in Anuradhapura. The momentum and prestige achieved by the two hotels are mainly due to the untiring efforts put in by these two hoteliers.

Opened in March 1998, Galway Forest Lodge has maintained a healthy occupancy throughout its four years of operation. Blessed with salubrious climate and surrounded by breathtaking valleys and meadows, mountains and greenery, and the stillness of the Galway Forest Reserve, the hotel is certainly a nature's paradise. The 'compact' hotel is always ready to cope up with the demand from revellers from the capital city, General Manager, Galway Forest Lodge, Tyrell Morrision said.

Pidurutalagala, Lake Gregory, World's End, Haggala Botanical Gardens, the picturesque race course, golf course and the charming Nuwara Eliya gardens being in close proximity to the hotel add to the charm of Galway Forest Lodge.

Theme nights at the hotel where a variety of delicious dishes prepared by Executive Chef, Wijesiry Delthalawage and his team of expert chefs are offered to guests with a change each day. At Galway Forest Lodge we look forward to seeing more and more Sri Lankans visiting us. For Sri Lankans, we offer special packages, Morrision said. We believe that the Sri Lankan tourist is the fastest mode of advertising our unique hotel among Sri Lankans and expatriates, Morrison said.

Elaborate arrangements are being made by Galway Forest Lodge for the April holiday season in Nuwara Eliya. Many special attractions and features are being planned to attract both foreign and Sri Lankans during the April season this year. 'The hotel will certainly take a carnival atmosphere this year in April' Morrison said.

Galway Forest Lodge is a member of Lake Inn Hotels (Pvt. Ltd. Director are Dayananda Gunathilake (Chairman), Upali Gunathilake (Managing Director) and Ms. T.J. Silva (Director).
