Four players picked for Davis Cup by LAL GUNESEKERA Four players have been selected to represent Sri Lanka at the Davis Cup (Asia/Oceania Zone Group IV) to be worked off in Dhaka, Bangladesh from March 20 to 24. The Sri Lankan team is scheduled to leave on Saturday (March 16). Sri Lanka will play the group matches in Dhaka. The four players are Rajiv Rajapakse, Franklyn Emmanuel, Oshada Wijemanne and Harshana Godamanne. The non playing captain is sanjay Wijemanne (a former Devis Cup player and national selector) with Irshad Othman as the manager. Wijemanne told the Sunday Observer that Rajapakse and Emmanuel will play in the singles with the doubles combination likely to be Rajapakse and Godamanne. However, there may be changes, depending on performances. Sri Lanka are in Group 'B' with Bangladesh, Jordan and Oman, while Brunei, Bahrain and Tajikistan are in Group 'A'. Sri Lanka were demoted to Group IV after their disastrous form last year in Manila where they lost to Singapore 1-2 and Philippines 0-2 and beating only Bahrain 2-1. Then in the relegation tie, Sri Lanka, lost to Qatar 1-2. Earlier, Sri Lanka, reached the semi-finals of Group II for four consecutive years (1989 to 1992) and escaped relegation in 1993, 1994 and 1996. However, they were demoted to Group III in 1997, 1998 and 2000, but gained promotion again in 1999 only to lose to Iran 2-3. |
