Hays' first offshore call centre in Sri Lanka

Hays plc, UK, a FTSE 100 company inaugurated its first offshore call centre at Colombo's World Trade Centre recently effectively introducing to the island, Business Process Outsourcing, a novel business concept offering great potential for replication in many service areas of the Sri Lankan economy.

Hays plc, a provider of Business Process Outsourcing solutions to industry recorded 2.4 billion sterling pounds in turnover in the accounting year 2001, a 21 per cent increase over 2000. Net profits jumped 34.25 per cent from 130.8 million pounds to 175.6 million before exceptional items.

Business Process Outsourcing (BPO) is an old concept in a new shape. It is subcontracting, extended to allow subcontracting of functions conventionally considered to be integral to running a business.

Mr. Eric Selvadurai, Managing Director, Hays BPO Services, Asia is the Sri Lankan founder of Data Entry international which pioneered the outsourcing business in Sri Lanka in the early 80s and later became Hays Sri Lanka after acquisition by Hays in 1998. Since 1998 direct employment at the Sri Lankan office has grown from 468 to over 750.
