United Motors increases market share to 47.2%

United Motors Lanka Limited (UMLL), a leading vehicle importer, has recorded a significant increase in its brand new vehicle market share during 2001. Its market share has risen from 26 per cent in 1998 to 47.2 per cent by the end of last year.

United Motors, is the sole distributor for all Mitsubishi vehicles, genuine parts and accessories in the island. It has been steadily increasing its market share despite the economical conditions of the country during 2001.

Although 2001 saw the reduction in vehicle sales in general, UMLL had adopted several strategies to overcome the challenges, Managing Director of UMLL Anil Wijesinghe said.

UMLL launched the sedans, Magna and Verada in April 2001. This was followed by the launch of the new Mitsubishi Lancer in July. The sales team was successful in selling 20 Lancers prior to the launch and the first shipment of 30 vehicles was sold out soon after the launch. The popularity of the Montero, Galant, and the L200 double cab had a positive impact on the intended target group.

United Motors also tied up with John Keells and Nations Trust Bank and launched the United Motors Nexus co-branded loyalty card which is seen as a value-added service to its loyal customers.

The workshop at Orugodawatte was also upgraded to meet the demands of an increasing customer base. All services offered at Orugodawatte will soon be offered in Colombo when the expansion programme of 'UniMo' Auto World takes place. Trading-in of vehicles, leasing and hiring of vehicles to the corporate sector were further enhanced when it was handed over to Orient Motor Company Limited, a fully-owned subsidiary of UMLL.
