Peaceful polls but for four murders

The local government election which ended on Wednesday March 20 in most of the areas of the country except in the North & East was relatively peaceful but for the murders of three United National Front supporters in Ratota, Chilaw and Puttalam on the eve of the election.

Earlier, about a fortnight ago, the murder of a People's Alliance supporter was reported from the Galle area, police said in their analysis of polls related violence.

Meanwhile police were able to trace the abducted United National Front (UNF) candidate for Kalawane, Nihal Gunaratne, dumped at Sunethra Place, Kohuwela with his hands tied last Wednesday around 11 p.m.

OIC Kohuwela police Inspector B.S. Tissera, said that Mr. Guneratne had been abducted from Kalawana on March 18 around 2.15 pm by a group of unknown persons by placing a towel on his face to make him unconscious. Thereafter, they had bundled him into a vehicle and taken to an unknown place where he was kept in solitary confinement in an upstair bungalow guarded by two men with firearms.

The victim was later found dumped in the Kohuwela area by the police on Wednesday and was despatched to the Colombo South Hospital as his condition was weak, police said. According to the Police Election Secretariat, the number of election related complaints reported at various police stations in the country by the political parties are: United National Front (UNF) 262, People's Alliance (PA) 251, Janatha Vimukuthi Peremuna (JVP) 137, Sri Lanka Muslim Congress 4, EPDP, 1, Independent Groups 13.

The highest number of incidents were reported from Gampaha 83, with Kalutara recording 48, Chilaw 56, Anuradhapura 42, Gampola 33 Keleniya 40, and Nugegoda 42.
