HOPE Cancer hosital project

by PELHAM JURIANSZ

The Sri Lankan Cricketer's Association (SLCA) together with the Lions Club of Colombo Somerset District 306 B announced the launch of their HOPE project to establish a well equipped cancer treatment hospital in Sri Lanka.

The two have collaborated and they will sign an MOU with the Government of Sri Lanka to allocate land within the premises of the Cancer Institute, Maharagama.

The project will be called the HOPE Cancer Hospital, will have an estimated 750 beds.

The total cost of the project will be Rs 750 million.

Speaking at the press conference held at the Lanka Oberoi last Tuesday, skipper of the Sri Lanka team Sanath Jayasuriya said that the Sri Lankan Cricketers Association (SLCA) will play an extensive role in soliciting funds for the project in association with the Lions Club of Colombo Somerset District 306 B.

The first phase of the HOPE hospital will be a 450 bed general ward along with an iodine ward and space for two radiotherapy machines.

The second phase will consist of two modern diagnostic, treatment and ancillary facilities.

The third phase will include a further 300 beds.

The HOPE Cancer Hospital will augment the existing facilities available at the Maharagama Cancer Hospital.

Ace batsman Mahela Jayawardene speaking at the conference said that he lost his younger brother to cancer when he was just sixteen. This prompted him to get involved in this life saving project.

Imran Khan, the popular Pakistani speedster and skipper was also involved in the building of a cancer hospital in Pakistan. In fact he dedicated the 1992 World Cup win to building this hospital because his mother was suffering from cancer at the time.

Also associated with this worthy project was former opening batsman Roshan Mahanama, the secretary of the Cricketers Association.

All contributions towards this hospital can be deposited at any Seylan Bank branch and have to be made in the name of the HOPE Cancer Hospital and this will be exempted from income tax.
