de Soysa for SAARC Golf Championships
by LAL GUNESEKERA The 15-year-old Amrith de Soysa gets his first major break when he represents Sri Lanka at the South Asian Association of Regional Co-operation (SAARC) Team and Individual Golf Championship in New Delhi, India from March 28 to 30. The Lankan contingent is scheduled to leave on Tuesday. Soysa who became the youngest to win the RCGC title last month, also won the under-15 titles at the All-India Championship earlier this year. The President of the Sri Lanka Golf Union (SLGU), Shiran de Soysa, told the Sunday Observer that the SLGU wants to encourage the youngster who will also figure at the British Junior Open Championship at Scotland in July. The other two players for New Delhi are the experienced Lalith Kumara and Jehan de Saram with Mark de Silva (Secretary of the SLGU) as the manager. Sri Lanka's most experienced player, Anura Rohana, has been kept out due to "personal reasons." He won the SAARC individual title a few years back. Rohana also won the Sri Lanka and Malaysian Amateur titles in 1999 in which year he won the Bangladesh title as well, which he regained earlier this year. Sri Lanka will also send a four-member team for the Pakistan Amateur Championship to be staged in Islamabad from April 18 to 21 and Anura Rohana is expected to be available for this event. The Sri Lanka Amateur Championship is also scheduled to be staged in September-October on the Ridgeways of the RCGC, with the SLGU confirming that India, Pakistan and Bangladesh being certain of participation, while South Africa, Nepal, Malaysia, Philippines and Myanmar too being invited. Meanwhile, one-leg of the Indian Pro Circuit too is scheduled to be staged in Sri Lanka in September where the prize money on offer will be US Dollars 35,000 with Tiger Sports Marketing (Pvt.) Limited of India to help finding the necessary sponsors. Willie Barsenbach has been appointed chairman of the selectors, the others are: Major General (Dr.) C. Thurairaja, Lalin Samarawickreme, M. J. Mansoor and Mrs. Suwaneetha Selvaratnam. |
