Lanka beaten by Scotland
HONG KONG, March 23 (AFP) - Kiwi teenager Joe Rokocoko may have only just left school, but the impressive youngster has shown he is still doing his homework with a trio of tries at the Hong Kong Rugby Sevens tournament. The 18-year-old mucked in with a brace Saturday as New Zealand shrugged off wet and windy conditions to dispatch doughty Portugal 54-0. And the under-19 international, whose form will surely catch have caught the eye of national selectors, said he was still learning the short game after a first run-out last week in Beijing. "It's hard in the first three games to actually get used to the pattern of sevens," Rokocoko said, adding he was taking lessons from veteran captain Eric Rush. Elsewhere, tournament legend Waisale Serevi scored 21 points as Fiji compiled the highest total of the competition -- 66 against hapless China. The three-times player of the tournament ran in a try and kicked eight conversions as China were buried under a mountain of points once again after Friday's hammering by Wales. The blustery weather threatened to blow South Africa's campaign off-course but the team muddled through a tricky encounter with Papua New Guinea to come out 24-7 winners. "It didn't go very well," South African captain Paul Treu said afterwards. "We could have done better but the conditions out there made it very difficult to play. "We played better yesterday but we've still got a lot to do to make it to the quarter-finals." Australia, England and Wales came through their matches unscathed but Scotland, who suffered a reverse at the hands of Portugal on Friday, contrived to let Sri Lanka score twice before coming through 19-10 winners. |
