Colts
need another 86 runs for victory
by RAJAN ANANDAPPA Test discard Romesh Kaluwitharana ( 67 n.o) and left-hander Sajith Fernando ( 38 n.o) with a 99-run third wicket stand brought Colts within the sight of an outright victory against NCC on the penultimate day of the semi final in the Premier Division cricket match at the P.Sara Stadium yesterday. Colts in persuit of an outright victory target of 217 in 137 overs, were 131 for 2 at close, needing a further 86 runs to win with 8 wikcets in hand with the whole of today. Kaluwitharana struck 11 boundaries facing 97 balls and Fernando had 5 fours facing 99 deliveries when the pair took the score from 32 for 2 to 131 for 2 in an unbroken third wicket stand of 99 which came off 171 balls. NCC scored 324 in their first innings and Colts replied with 298. NCC were 4 for 0 overnight in their second innings and were restricted to 190 with left arm spinner Dinuk Hettiarachchi ( 4 for 45) and Muthumudalige Pushpakumara (3 for 46) combining effectively to tie down the NCC batsman. Besides a 40-run stand for the first wicket between Pradeep Hewage (31) and Naveed Nawaz ( 20) the rest lost their way agaisnt the steady spin bowling attack of Hettiarachchi and Pushpakumara. NCC were 123 for 3 at one stage but crumbled to spin and lost their last seven wickets for 66 runs. Kumar Sangakkara(37) and Russel Arnold (50) made useful contributions to help NCC to threir final score of 190.
