England cricketer Ben Hollioake cremated in Australia

PERTH, Australia, March 30 (AFP) - Former England Test and one-day international cricketer Ben Hollioake was cremated near here Thursday, five days after he died in a road smash in the Western Australian capital.

The cremation of the 24-year-old allrounder, at a private ceremony in Fremantle cemetery, came the day after a funeral service attended by about 250 people.

His brother Adam, another former England international, delivered an emotional tribute at the funeral, describing Ben as a vibrant person.

"He was a beautiful work of art, a classic sculpture," he told mourners at a Cathlic church near Fremantle.

Ben Hollioake was killed in Perth early Saturday morning when his Porsche hit a brick retaining wall as he and his 23-year-old girlfriend Janaya Scholten were returning home after a family dinner.

The girlfriend remains in a critical but stable condition in Royal Perth Hospital with head and chest injuries.

Among mourners at the funeral were England Test captain Nasser Hussain and Hollioake's former Surrey teammates, including former England captain Alec Stewart.

Members of Western Australia's sporting fraternity, including one of Ben's close friends, West Coast Eagles Australian Football League star Ben Cousins, also paid their respects.
