Murali's injury saddens UK cricket lovers by REGGIE FERNANDO, our London Correspondent Cricket lovers from many quarters here including former Prime Minister John Major, Chairman of England and Wales Cricket Board (ECB), Tim Lamb, top ECB officials such as John Carr, cricket officials at Lords and hundreds of others including Dr. Daya Pandita Gunawardena, the UK representative of BCCSL, expressed their sadness over the discouraging news of Murali's injury that threatens his participation in this Summers Test series against England. Speaking to the 'Sunday Observer' Dr. Pandita Gunawardena who was in the offices of the ECB at Lord's when the news came through said: "The news of Murali's shoulder injury comes as a big shock to the cricket lovers in the UK. I have had numerous telephone calls inquiring about the extent of the injury and many people appeared to be quite devastated. "The shock, the sadness and the disappointment of not seeing Murali in actinon the UK has filtered right through the Sri Lankan community here. "It is not only the Sri Lankan community who are disappointed for the reaction from senior members at the ECB was also one of genuine disappointment. "Every one here remembers the 16 wickets that Murali took at the Oval Test match in 1998 when he almost single handedly defeated England in registering Sri Lanka's first Test victory on English soil." Dr. Pandita Gunawardena also said that cricket lovers all over England fervently hope that Murali will be alright in time for him to paly in at least some of the games. |
