Alain Gyi top performer in Mercedes Benz golf by PELHAM JURIANSZ The Mercedes Benz Trophy went to Alain Gyi who won the Group "A" handicap at the Sri Lanka finals held at the Royal Colombo Golf Club (RCGC) yesterday. This tournament was sponsored by the Diesel and Motor Engineering Company, (DIMO) for the 11th successive year. The first runner up was F. J. De Saram with 38 points and second runner up was Erath Karunaratne with 36 points. The Group "B" handicap winner was Jo Il Ko with 38 points and first runner up Captain Navin de Silva of SriLankan Airlines with 36 points and second runner up Ananda Jayasekera with 36 points. Group "C' handicap winner was the youngest player 14-year-old Sanjaya Gunewardena with the highest 40 points and Shivantha de Soysa was second with 37 points with a better back nine and second runner-up was Thejan de Silva also with 37 points. The nearest to-the-pin award went to Rahula Seneviratne with 5 ft 2 ins and the longest drive to 15-year-old Amrith de Soysa with 261 yards. No one managed to get a hole-in-one. The wooden spoonist award went to Mohan Alles and the youngest player award to Sanjaya Gunawardene. The winners and runners-up of each handicap will get a wonderful opportunity of going abroad. Last year the regional championship was held in Brisbane, Australia. This year's Sri Lanka Country Stableford Golf Tournament was conducted according to the following handicaps over 18 holes: Group 'A': 0-12, Group B: 13-20, Group C: 21-24. The winners and runners-up of each handicap will qualify for the "Asian finals" to be held in Australia. The world finals are scheduled to be held in Stuttgart, Germany where the winners of the Asian Finals will have the opportunity to participate. Last year, Nanda Karunaratne qualified for the World finals in Stuttgart, Germany. |
