Fish canning project at Gandara

The Ceylon Fisheries Corporation in collaboration with a Russian financial firm will set up a fish canning plant close to the Gandara fishery harbour in the near future.

Letters of Intent have already been signed while discussions are going on to decide the investment and the share to be invested by each party, said a senior official of the Fisheries and Ocean Resources Ministry.

Once the venture gets off the ground, it will provide a large number of direct and indirect employment opportunities.

He said the plant will be the first of its kind to be set up in Sri Lanka after two decades, since the previous canned fish plant at Pesalai was closed down in the 70s.

The Russian firm, Informprogress, the joint partner of the project, will also undertake the maintenance of the Gandara fishery harbour.

The agreement was signed recently by Minister of Fisheries and Ocean Resources Mahinda Wijesekera and Informprogress' Sergey Dychev.
