Hingurakgoda
incident report handed over: No Airmen involved
By Ramani Kangaraarachchi Air Commodore Ravi Arunthavanathan who probed into the incident at Hingurakgoda last week has handed over the report to Air Vice Marshall Jayalath Weerakkody on Thursday. The report has revealed that there was no evidence to suggest the involvement of Airmen in the attack on villages at Navaratnagama. Air Commodore Arunthavanathan told the "Sunday Observer" that the matter has been settled and normalcy has returned to the village. He said that around 25 airmen have been interrogated and found that there was no evidence of their involvement in the alleged attack. No air force vehicles have been misused to transport airmen to the scene of the attack on the day of the attack and none of the airmen had sustained injuries. However two airmen were injured in a separate incidents that took place previously on Saturday when two rival groups had fought each other. It had been found that two airmen who had come to witness the musical show sustained minor injuries due to the fracas. But some villagers had suspected the involvement of airmen in the attack due to injuries sustained by these two airmen. He also said that there was evidence to suggest the involvement of a political party urging the villagers to launch a protest campaign against the attack on the villagers. Two people had sustained injuries and 25 houses and 13 vehicles belonging to civilians were damaged in the attack. Meanwhile Police sources said on the day of the incident around 20-30 civilians had gone into the village of Navaratnagama during the period of power cuts and had assaulted several persons and caused damage to the property. However the persons involved in the attack were not identified by the villagers or by any one else, he said. |
