Ceylon Tea gets boost in Japan

The Sri Lanka Tea Board together with the Sri Lanka mission in Tokyo conducted a major propaganda campaign for Ceylon Tea in Japan recently. It included a national pavilion for Sri Lanka at the Foodex Japan 2002, an awards ceremony to felicitate tea buyers and several workshops and seminars.

The Tea Board and the Export Development Board arranged the Sri Lankan national pavilion at the 27th International Food and Beverage Exhibition 'Foodex Japan 2002' at Chiba City, Tokyo.

Easwaran Brothers Exports (Pvt) Ltd., Ranfer Teas (Pvt) Ltd., Stassen Exports Ltd., Standard Trading Co Pvt Ltd., IDA Lanka Tatsuya Pvt Ltd., HVA Lanka Exports Pvt Ltd., Ni-Cey International Pvt Ltd., Tea Tang Ltd., Imperial Teas Pvt Ltd., Mabroc Teas Pvt Ltd. and the Tea Board represented the tea sector while the other products represented were spices, coconut milk powder, essential oils, beer and dehydrated foods.

The representatives of the tea sector received inquiries from buyers in Japan and importers and distributors from Taiwan, Hong Kong, Korea, Philippines and Malaysia. Promotional literature, leaflets, brochures and booklets in Japanese were distributed at the exhibition.

Those who visited the Sri Lankan stall got an opportunity to taste Ceylon Tea, served by two young women clad in batik sarees.

The Sri Lanka tea trade together with the Sri Lankan Embassy in Japan held an awards ceremony in Tokyo to felicitate tea buyers in Japan.

The Tea Promotion Bureau in association with the Commercial Section of the Sri Lankan mission in Japan also organised a workshop and seminar at the food hall. They targeted Japanese tea buyers, importers, packers, blenders, convenience store owners and supermarket and departmental store chain decision makers. Two seminars on tea were arranged for working girls and housewives by the Sri Lankan Embassy in Tokyo together with the Japan Tea Association at the conclusion of the Foodex Trade Show.
