Western Australia interested in investing, trading with Lanka

by Ramani Kangaraarachchi

Dr. Geoff Gallop, the state premier in Western Australia, has shown interest in Sri Lanka as a trading partner and as an investment destination. He has also stated that he would like to see Sri Lankan entrepreneurs explore the opportunities Western Australia has to offer them.

This was stated when Major General Janaka Perera, the Sri Lankan High Commissioner in Australia, and Ms Wajira Perera visited Western Australia on the invitation of the Minister of Foreign Affairs Alexander Downer recently. The visit was organised to give heads of missions an opportunity to meet Mr. Downer and to gain an insight of Western Australia's economic development, history and culture.

As a large producer of grain and pulses, Western Australia was keen on exporting agricultural products to Sri Lanka and also to learn about products that could be imported from Sri Lanka, according to the High Commissioner. He noted the possibility of exporting natural gas to Sri Lanka, which has an urgent need to establish resources for power generation, when he visited the natural gas facilities on-shore and off-shore at Karratha, a centre for steel mining projects in the North West.

The High Commissioner also met the expatriate Sri Lankan community, business leaders and others who are keen to help in further strengthening the links between Sri Lanka and Australia in trade, investment, sports and cultural interchange.

He stated that Argyle Diamonds, a large exporter of diamonds, which sends some of its diamonds to Sri Lanka for cutting and polishing, is now exploring the feasibility of tapping into resources in Sri Lanka.

The Head of Lions Eye Institute Brian King has told the High Commissioner that his institute could train Sri Lankan eye surgeons in their special projects. This institute has developed a system to scan the eyes of patients in remote places and send the scans to another location via the Internet for diagnosis and prescription.

Clough Engineering Ltd., a large engineering firm in the area, which has undertaken contracts in Sri Lanka, has also agreed to resume contracts after this meeting.
